Adonis The paintings of Syrian poet, essayist and translator Ali Ahmad Said Esber, better known as Adonis or Adunis, are being exhibited at Enclave Independent Bookstore until Oct. 31. Adonis, 88, is considered one of the most influential and dominant Arab poets of the modern era. He led a modernist revolution in the second half of the 20th century, exerting a seismic influence on Arabic poetry comparable to T.S. Eliot’s in the Anglophone world. It tells of a beautiful love story between a mortal and an immortal: Seventh Fairy is the seventh daughter of the Jade Emperor. She meets mortal Dong Yong and they get married. The Jade Emperor separates them as immortals and mortals cannot marry.
